In honour of Halloween, we recently created a post highlighting some ways to help gauge if a tree on your property could be dying or dead. Have a read below and see if you might have a tree that is soon to join the other side.
1. Branches Dropping
If you notice branches dropping regularly, it can indicate your tree isn’t doing so well.
Inspect any branches for signs of pests, lack of leaves or rot.
If the branches are brittle or lighter in weight than you would expect it might be deadwood – a sign that your tree is sick.
2. Fungus or Mushrooms are Growing on the Tree
If you can see mushrooms growing on the trunk, roots or branches of your tree, there is a good chance your tree is dead or on its way out. Mushrooms help to break down organic matter, so if you’re tree is still standing, it might not be for long. Always have any signs of fungus assessed by a professional, to be safe.
3. Cracks in the Trunk
While not all cracks in a tree are concerning, cracks can be caused by a multitude of issues that can indicate your tree is not well.
Cracks can indicate stress, disease, or structural weakness, making the tree more vulnerable to damage. Regular inspection helps catch underlying issues early, ensuring the tree stays healthy and safe.
4. Lack of New Growth
If the tree shows little to no new leaves, shoots, or buds, it’s likely not getting the resources it needs to survive. A lack of growth is a critical sign of a dying tree.
If you haven’t seen any new growth in a while and scratching the bark doesn’t show green, healthy tissue underneath your tree might already be dead.
If you have any of these signs, or you just feel like something’s not quite right, it’s always worth getting a professional opinion. We offer obligation free assessments to help you identify at risk trees. Don’t get a fright – check your trees before they give up the ghost!.
