How crown lifting works
Crown lifting is the removal of lower branches from a tree to raise the height of the canopy above ground level. It creates vertical clearance between the ground and the base of the crown, improving access, light penetration and the visual balance of the tree. Crown lifting is a recognised pruning specification under Australian Standard AS 4373-2007 and, when performed correctly, does not compromise the tree’s health or structural integrity.
The technique involves removing whole lower branches or shortening them back to a suitable growth point. The height of the lift depends on the tree’s species, age and the clearance required. As a general guide, the remaining live crown should not be reduced to less than two-thirds of the tree’s total height. This preserves the tree’s energy production and structural balance.

When done properly by a qualified arborist, crown lifting does not damage the tree.
