Tree canopy thinning and crown lifting Sydney

More light, more space, healthier trees

Crown lifting removes the lower branches of a tree to open up space underneath and let light back into your home and garden. Done properly by qualified arborists, it improves access, reduces risk and keeps the tree healthy. Done badly, it causes lasting damage.

Lower branches removed, tree health protected

What proper crown lifting delivers

Crown lifting is one of the most effective ways to reclaim space under your trees without removing them. But it needs to be done at the right points, to the right height, by someone who understands tree biology. Here is what we bring to every crown lifting job.

  • More natural light

Removing lower branches lets sunlight reach your garden, lawn and living spaces without stripping the canopy above.

  • Safer access underneath

Clear the space below your trees for walking, mowing, parking and children’s play areas. No more ducking under low branches.

  • pruning

    Proper pruning cuts

Every cut is made to Australian Standard AS 4373-2007, at the correct position to promote clean healing and prevent decay.

  • Qualified arborists

Our crew holds formal arborist qualifications and assesses each tree individually before any branches are removed.

  • Fully insured

$50 million public liability insurance on every job. No exceptions.

    Clean sites

Selective removal, not indiscriminate cutting

How crown lifting works

Crown lifting is the removal of lower branches from a tree to raise the height of the canopy above ground level. It creates vertical clearance between the ground and the base of the crown, improving access, light penetration and the visual balance of the tree. Crown lifting is a recognised pruning specification under Australian Standard AS 4373-2007 and, when performed correctly, does not compromise the tree’s health or structural integrity.

The technique involves removing whole lower branches or shortening them back to a suitable growth point. The height of the lift depends on the tree’s species, age and the clearance required. As a general guide, the remaining live crown should not be reduced to less than two-thirds of the tree’s total height. This preserves the tree’s energy production and structural balance.

Dixons Trees has been performing crown lifting and all forms of professional pruning across the Blue Mountains, Penrith, Hawkesbury, Western Sydney and the Central Coast since 2009. Whether you have a single mature eucalypt shading out your garden or a row of street trees blocking sightlines, we assess each tree individually and recommend only the work that is actually needed.

Identifying and Managing Common Tree Pests and Diseases

Common situations

When is crown lifting the right approach?

Crown lifting solves specific problems without removing the tree. Here are the most common reasons we are called out for this work.

Blocked light to your home

Low branches and dense lower canopy can block sunlight from windows, gardens and outdoor living areas. In the Blue Mountains, where properties are often surrounded by mature eucalypts, raising the crown height can dramatically improve natural light without sacrificing the tree’s presence or privacy screening.

Obstructed access and walkways

Branches hanging over paths, driveways and parking areas create a nuisance and a hazard. Crown lifting clears the space for pedestrian and vehicle access. For strata complexes and commercial properties, maintaining clearance is an ongoing maintenance requirement.

Mowing and garden access

Low branches that sweep the ground make it difficult to mow underneath or maintain garden beds. Lifting the crown to a practical height gives you back usable garden space and makes routine maintenance straightforward.

Improved views

Trees that block views from your home or block sightlines along driveways and intersections can often be improved with crown lifting rather than removal. Raising the lower canopy opens up views at eye level while keeping the upper canopy intact.

Neighbour disputes

Branches extending low over a neighbour’s fence or property are a common source of complaints. Crown lifting on your side of the boundary resolves the issue cleanly. If branches are overhanging from a neighbour’s tree, we can advise on your options under NSW legislation.

Preparing for renovation or construction

Building work near established trees often requires clearance for scaffolding, machinery or vehicle access. Crown lifting can provide the necessary space without requiring tree removal, which may simplify council approvals and protect landscape value.

Strata and commercial property maintenance

Body corporate managers and commercial property managers need consistent clearance across common areas, car parks and pathways. We provide scheduled crown lifting as part of annual maintenance programs, with documentation for committee approval.

Qualified arborists, proper technique

We lift crowns without compromising tree health

Most of the crown lifting we do is on mature trees in established residential areas. Large eucalypts shading out gardens. Pin oaks dropping branches over driveways. Trees that have been growing unchecked for decades and now need careful management. That is the work we are set up for.

Crown lifting sounds simple, but getting it wrong causes real problems. Removing too many lower branches destabilises the tree. Cutting in the wrong position invites decay. Taking branches that are too large leaves wounds the tree cannot close. Our arborists assess the tree’s species, age and condition, then determine how much can be safely removed to achieve the clearance you need while keeping the tree healthy.

If crown lifting alone will not solve the problem, we will tell you. Sometimes a combination of crown lifting and crown thinning delivers a better result. Sometimes the tree needs a different approach entirely. You will get an honest recommendation, not just the service you asked for.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Crown lifting is a pruning technique that involves removing the lower branches of a tree to raise the height of the canopy. It creates clearance underneath the tree for access, light and maintenance. It is a recognised specification under Australian Standard AS 4373-2007 and, when done properly, does not harm the tree.

It depends on the number of trees, their species, size, access and the height of lift required. A single tree in an open yard is straightforward. Multiple large trees with limited access take longer. We provide a detailed quote after an on-site assessment so you understand the full scope and cost before any work begins. Contact us for a free assessment.

It depends on the tree. As a general guide, the remaining live crown should not be reduced to less than two-thirds of the tree’s total height. Removing too many lower branches weakens the tree and can trigger excessive regrowth or structural instability. Our arborists assess each tree individually and recommend a safe lift height.

No. Crown lifting is a targeted pruning technique that removes specific lower branches using proper cuts that promote healing. “Tree lopping” refers to indiscriminate cutting that often causes long-term damage. We provide professional pruning to Australian Standards, not lopping.

In the Blue Mountains, you generally need a permit to prune trees that are 4 metres or taller, have a crown spread of more than 4 metres, or are a mallee-formed eucalyptus species. Some exemptions apply, including selective pruning of branches directly overhanging your roof. We advise you during the assessment and help with the permit process if needed.

When done properly by a qualified arborist, crown lifting does not damage the tree. The key is removing the right branches, at the right height, with correct cuts that allow the tree to heal naturally. Poor crown lifting, where too many branches are removed or cuts are made in the wrong position, can cause decay, regrowth problems and structural weakness. That is why it matters who does the work.

Crown lifting removes lower branches to raise the canopy height. Crown thinning removes selected branches throughout the canopy to reduce density and allow more light through. They address different problems and are often done together. Our arborists recommend the right combination based on your trees and what you are trying to achieve.

It depends on the species and growth rate. Most crown lifting work lasts several years before regrowth or new low branches need attention. Fast-growing species may need maintenance every 2–3 years. We can set up a maintenance schedule tailored to your property.

Most species respond well to crown lifting, but some are more sensitive than others. Very old or mature trees require extra caution, as large wounds on older trees heal more slowly and are more susceptible to decay. Our arborists assess each tree’s suitability before recommending work.

All branches and debris are chipped on site and removed from your property. If you would like to keep wood chips as garden mulch, we are happy to arrange that. We discuss your preference before we start.
